Who tape extensions suit — and who they don’t
Tape is the method we fit most often on fine and thin hair, and the reason is weight distribution. Each wefted panel spreads its hold across a wide, flat area instead of pulling on a few strands, so the same grams of hair sit far more comfortably than a strand-by-strand method would. It also goes in fast — sixty to ninety minutes — and the hair comes off and goes back on at each maintenance visit, so you are paying for application rather than buying hair again.
It is not the right method for everyone. You need roughly four inches of natural hair for the panels to sit hidden, so very short crops are out. Tape cannot be placed right at the parting or the front hairline, which matters if thinning at the crown is your main concern — a hair topper covers that far better. And if you have a genuinely oily scalp, tell us at the consultation: the adhesive is what holds the panel, and oil is what breaks it down.
That last point matters more in Chennai than the manufacturer’s instructions suggest. Regular oiling is normal in most South Indian hair routines, and coconut or almond oil worked through the roots will loosen tape bonds within weeks. The fix is not to stop oiling — it is to oil from mid-length down and keep it off the panels. We show you where the line sits on your own head at the fitting.
Plan on a maintenance visit every six to eight weeks, when the panels are removed, the hair is re-taped and put back higher up the root. Skip it and the panels travel down with your growing hair, which is when they start to show and to pull.
Tape extensions on fine, thin or short hair
Tape extensions for fine hair work when the panels are placed sparsely and the weight is kept low — the flat panel spreads its hold across a wider section of hair than a ring or bond does, which is why we reach for tape or nano ring on thin hair and not weft. On short hair the rule is length: your own hair has to cover the panels, so a chin-length cut usually can and a pixie cannot; ask at the trial and we will show you on your own head.
Tape extensions for volume or length, and how they wear
For volume, tape is the most popular method we fit — panels sit flat, add fullness through the mid-lengths, and hide under fine hair. For length, the same panels in longer hair.
