How to Remove Hair Extensions Safely
Removal is the step where the most avoidable damage happens, because it looks like something you can do at home and it is not. Every method attaches the extension to your own hair, and every method needs its own way of undoing that without taking your hair with it. Done properly it takes under an hour and leaves your hair exactly as it was. Done with a pair of scissors and some determination, it does not.
This is what removal involves for each method, what it costs, and the cases where you should not remove them at all yet.
Method by method
Tape-in
A tape remover — usually oil- or alcohol-based — is applied to the panel and worked in until the adhesive releases. The two panels are then peeled gently apart, away from the hair. Any adhesive residue left on your own hair is worked out with more remover and a fine comb. Pulling a panel off without the solvent takes the section of hair sandwiched between the tapes with it. Keratin fusion
A bond remover is applied to each keratin bond to soften it, then the bond is broken down with a specific pair of pliers and slid off the hair. It is strand by strand, so it takes time — often an hour for a full head. Residue is combed out afterwards. Bonds cannot be cut out, crushed without the remover, or pulled; all three take your hair. The bonds are not reusable, which is why keratin gives the longest single fitting but not the longest-lasting hair.
Micro and nano rings
The ring is opened with the same pliers that closed it, and the extension strand and your hair slide free. No solvent, no residue, nothing dissolved. This is the simplest removal of any method and part of why rings are the gentlest option overall. But a ring forced open with the wrong tool, or pulled without being opened, crushes or drags the hair inside it.
Weft / sew-in
The thread securing the weft to its track is cut and unpicked, and the row is lifted out. Cutting the thread is easy; cutting your own hair alongside it is easier, which is why it is done by someone who can see the track properly. The track is then brushed out.
Clip-ins
Open the clips and lift them out. This is the one method you remove yourself, every night, and the only care it needs is to open the clip fully rather than sliding it out closed.
Why not do it yourself
Because the failure mode is losing your own hair, and it is not recoverable. Removal without the right solvent or tool means either pulling — which takes the hair the extension was attached to — or cutting, which takes the hair around it. Both leave short, broken sections at the roots that show for months. Removal with us is from ₹2,000 on the price list. When to remove, and when to move up instead
Most people who want extensions out do not actually want them out; they want the grown-out attachments dealt with. Tape and weft need moving up every six to eight weeks, rings every eight to twelve. At that visit the attachments are taken down and refitted higher, the hair is reused, and you keep the length. That is maintenance, from ₹3,000 — see how often extensions need moving up.
Remove rather than move up when: you want a break from extensions; the hair itself has reached the end of its life and you are not replacing it; you are changing method; or something is wrong — tenderness at the attachments that does not settle, matting a brush cannot clear, or shedding that has started since the fitting. In the last case, come in; do not wait for a scheduled visit.
After removal
Your hair will look thinner than you remember, because you have been looking at it with extensions for weeks. It has not thinned; the comparison has changed. Any residue is combed out at the appointment. Brush gently for the first few days, condition well, and give the scalp a week before refitting if you are having a new set. If you are keeping the hair for refitting later, it is cleaned and stored flat, not folded.
